On Being Creative

Create
/krē-ˈāt/

verb
*cause (something) to happen as a result of one’s actions.

Every day we have the option to create. And for some we create without even knowing we are. What would you say if I asked you to take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and stretch your mind? Would you say you are too busy or welcome the idea? Opening your mind up to being more creative is the first step in helping you release that creativeness that is in you.

Thinking back when I was a child I remember always being told to color inside the lines. As children we learned that coloring inside the lines made us feel accepted and safe there. But what if you colored outside of the lines? Looked at things in a different way? In creating, you find the freedom to be you. It opens up a whole other world, a world where you can do anything you put your mind to. Open up your mind to imagining, dreaming and creating.

There is no right or wrong to being creative. All you need to do is open up to the idea of creating something. Stretch your mind and think outside the box. By simply sitting quietly and letting your mind wander, thinking of all the things that make you happy, and staying in that state for a few minutes will give you a creative edge.

Research has shown that by creating or even repairing things by hand enhances mental health, decreases stress, relieves anxiety and makes us happier. Creating something with our hands gives us satisfaction and pride and we feel vital and effective.

Going back to the definition of Create. It is a verb and means to “cause (something) to happen as a result of one’s actions”. Action is the key word here. Without action, without creating, our minds are stifled. In this technological world we live in where we do less and less creating with our hands, giving our mind a rest and creating something with our hands is a proven way to be healthier and happier.

What will you go out and create today?
