Sage Burning To Clear Negative Energy From Your Space And Life.

Sage burning, or smudging, is a common name given for the process of burning herbs for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Smudging is a ritual that has been around for thousands of years and is used to cleanse and purify the physical and spiritual body. Some attribute smudging to that of taking a ‘spiritual shower,’ enabling you to wash away emotional and spiritual negativity that accumulates in your body and the spaces you occupy. A smudge ritual/ceremony is performed to correct the energy in any space such as your home, in an office, in an object, or a person. This practice has increasingly gained popularity by the Western world and it symbolizes protection and healing in many Native cultures.

Benefits of Smudging:

This power herb is considered sacred by the Native people who still continue to use it today to treat illnesses or emotional imbalances, as a spiritual cleanse and to clear stagnated energies that remain stuck in the air.  Smudging allows you to wash away all the emotional and spiritual negativity that gathers in your body and your space or home over time. The effects of smudging can be very effective, often releasing stress and any negativeness or heaviness in your home almost instantly and providing positive energy and peace. If you are feeling stuck, mentally or spiritually, sage is a great way to lift off the old energies so that new positive energies can be created.

Working with Sage:

Most people choose to burn White Sage with a container or small bowl. There are Abalone shells that you may use, but be careful as they have small holes in the bottom which any loose embers could fall through. You will want to light the sage stick with a match and then blow out the flame (the match and sage stick) allowing the sage stick to smolder. Do not inhale the smoke.

The sage smudging ritual is where the smoke from the sage stick is directed into and onto areas that are in need of clearing and protection. As the leaves are burned, you set your intentions for the ritual. You may ask for assistance, you may have a request or you may want to spread gratitude and love in your space or on your body. Whatever your intentions, have those thoughts in your head before lighting the sage stick. The spirit of the sage plant releases it’s energy of protection and clearing the space or onto the object that needs clearing.

As the smoke moves through the room or over a surface, the smoke attaches itself to any heavy, negative energy that is within the space, object or being. You will want to direct the smoke with a feather or your hand into corners, doorways, windows and hallways. You may also be directed through your intuition as to where the smoke needs to be directed. As the smoke clears, the spirit of the White Sage carries with it the negative energy that was once attached, back up to the Spiritual Light. This heavy energy then becomes released, so that it may regenerate into something positive.

How smudging has helped me:

Recently I noticed a heaviness in my home. I wasn’t sleeping well and it started to take its toll on me. I had asked my husband and daughters if they also were having trouble sleeping or anything else they wanted to share with me. Interestingly, everyone had a story to tell me. From “I keep waking up for no reason” to “I feel like something isn’t right”. I knew that whatever was causing this negative energy in the house, it had to go and smudging was an absolute certain way to get our house back to normal. In each room, I stated my intentions and used a feather to move the smoke around the room. Sounds kind of woo-woo I know. But the results are astounding. You don’t have to be perfect in your technique while doing this, you just need to have love and intention for it to work.

Your home should be a place where you walk in the door after a long day and it should feel light, almost like it’s welcoming you home with open arms. If this isn’t the case, then it could be time for you to do some space clearing in your home. This simple technique of smudging can be done everyday as a part of your morning or evening ritual, or whenever you feel it is necessary. It will bring light into your life and it will begin to heal you, it will activate your confidence, your self esteem, and it will help you step into your greater self. It will heal relationships and remove old habits and it will begin to energize your life and your home.
